Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, KNUST Focal Person for the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), met with the university’s web managers to update them on the programme and its implementation.
Prof. Kponyo explained that OMCP is a national digital-skills initiative designed to equip one million Ghanaians with practical, in-demand coding and digital technology skills. The programme aims to improve employability, promote entrepreneurship, and increase participation in the digital economy.
He said four centres have been established at KNUST for the programme: the Department of Computer Science, the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Faculty of Chemical and Mechanical Engineering, and the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL).
Prof. Kponyo reported a cumulative enrollment of 1,447 students, with 195 already completing the programme. He said first-year students are to be encouraged to enroll, and charged web managers of the colleges to communicate and publicise the initiative widely.
He added that, as part of the Minister’s visit to KNUST this week, the programme will also focus on third- and final-year students to better prepare them for the job market after graduation.
