Our Focus as a Theme

Know about our impact project

RAIL aims at strengthening innovation systems and fostering adoption of food and agri-based digital technologies based on AI/ML, blockchain and IoTs which have the potential to make it easier and more efficient for farmers and small business owners, especially women and girls, to produce and market their goods and services, leading to greater profits. Research activities between academic, agribusiness firms, policy making actors will help improve adaptation, and use of agri-based digital technologies by farmers. The focus will be on SMEs, especially led and managed by women and youth to enhance agricultural production and marketing technique through strengthened linkages among stakeholders. Activities under this theme will contribute to implementation of ECOWAS and national policies and strategies related to Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) and ICT as well as the African Union’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA 2024). Activities under this thematic area will focus on; (1) developing a framework for Precision Agriculture to fit into the One District, One Dam (1D1D) initiative, (2) Using AI to decide the amount of water needed by a particular type of crop for maximum yield, (3) Learning the weather pattern over a period to fully automate irrigation with no or minimum human intervention, and (3) Creating a platform to link all the key actors in the Agricultural value chain to limit wastage.
