Call for Applications for 1st Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab Innovation Challenge 2022
The Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) is pleased to announce the 1st Call for Research Proposals for funding support as in line with the lab’s objectives of developing talents and innovations in AI/ML.
The Lab has been established to enhance applied, problem-solving, interdisciplinary research for the socio-economic development of Ghana and Africa. Applicants are therefore required to conceive and develop interdisciplinary research projects in the priority areas listed below to help solve relevant problems in Ghana.

Award
This fund supports small pilot or exploratory research projects focusing on exploring the feasibility of new research approaches, allowing investigators to collect preliminary data to subsequently develop major grant applications, or complete short-term research studies. Funding for these proposals shall be up to GH¢ 10,000 per award.
Award Period
Each award will be for a period of one year.
Innovation Challenge Eligibility
Each research project must have a staff of KNUST as part of the team.
Application Information and Proposal Guidelines
Applicants must provide a detailed methodology regarding how the research will be carried out. A detailed timeline for the completion of the research and details (including pictures, specifications, price quotations, etc) of the equipment and other items to be bought for the research must also be provided.
The proposal must contain the following headings outlined below and Conformance to this outline is required and will be strictly enforced:
- Cover Letter
- Title Page
- Abstract
- Table of Contents
- Introduction
- Narrative of Technical Proposal
- Literature Review
- Project Goals
- Project Hypothesis and Objectives
- Methodology
- Evaluation/Milestones Chart.
- Budget (Cost Proposal and Financial Plan)
- Project Implications
- Dissemination/Utilization
Proposals must not exceed 10 pages (12 pts, Single line spacing)
Review Information
All applications will be independently reviewed and a committee will select awardees subject to the approval of the Management Team.
Submission Process
Applicants must submit their applications to: rail@knust.edu.gh. The subject line should read: “RAIL Innovation Call Submission”. No submission will be received after the deadline. Only electronic submissions received by the deadline will be accepted for review. The deadline for submission of applications is 15th July 2022 at 5 pm GMT.
