RAIL UNVEILED AT THE WOMEN IN ENGINEERING (WinE), KNUST CHAPTER MEETING
The Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) was unveiled at the Women in Engineering (WinE), KNUST Chapter meeting on Wednesday, 10th August 2022, at Levine Hall. The briefing included RAIL’s vision and mission, RAIL impact projects, the opportunities available to WinE in RAIL, and the need to train and retain females in Technology.
Dr. Eunice Akyereko Adjei, Women in Technology Officer for RAIL, stated that RAIL seeks to be a first step in establishing a sustainable approach to nurturing local talents to undertake responsible AI research and innovation. She added that RAIL has a solid drive to increase female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through its numerous activities.
Dr. Adjei indicated that the project has a vision of developing talents in Robotics, Neural Networks, Machine learning, Expert Systems, Fuzzy Logic and many more, which will bridge the widening skill gap needed to champion the Digital Economic Transformation agenda of Ghana and the sub-region.
She introduced participants to the RAIL Impact Projects: AI in Energy Systems, AI in Health, Responsible and Ethical Use of AI and AI in Agriculture and Food Security. She encouraged members of the KNUST chapter to avail themselves when calls for applications are announced and participate fully in the project’s activities. Participants asked questions during the open forum session, giving more insights.
Dr. Adjei concluded by saying women form the critical mass of the world’s population statistics with unbalanced technological workforce representation. Hence, the need for a conscious effort to offer skills-based training in AI for women to come out with balanced gender solutions in technology to augment the status quo. She reiterated that the ladies should remain and advance the technology workforce to increase gender balance and inclusivity in technology.
