SHECodes Club Graduates First Cohort
On July 29, 2023, the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL), in collaboration with Women in Engineering (WinE) KNUST, hosted an Arduino challenge and graduation ceremony for the inaugural cohort of the SHECodes Club. The SHECodes club is a digital skills development programme that trains female KNUST students. The club seeks to equip ladies from diverse fields of study with coding essentials and build their capacities in AI-based solutions to solve real-life problems.
In his remarks, Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director, RAIL, said the future belongs to those who can navigate the digital space. He asserted that getting high grades is not the only means of determining one’s career path, but initiatives like the SHECodes club add value to oneself by acquiring real-life skills.
He said that the Cohort 1 graduates are ambassadors of the club and have the onus of sharing the knowledge and skills acquired with their colleagues and the next cohort. He appreciated the efforts of the RAIL team, especially Dr. Eunice Akyereko Adjei, Women in Technology Officer, Dr. Henry Nunoo-Mensah, Programmes Manager, RAIL and Kasuadana Sulemana Adams and William Dadzi-Rhule, instructors from the College of Engineering Innovation Center.
During the training, participants worked on a group project and presented their ideas to the panel during the Arduino challenge session. Students demonstrated their skills, exchanged ideas, and learnt from each other’s projects. They showcased their creativity by applying the knowledge gained in Arduino to these projects.
About 150 students received certificates for completing the 9-week Arduino and coding training.
