RS²LAB Participates in Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development
The Responsible and Smart Solutions Laboratory (RS²LAB), a satellite lab of the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) in Cabo Verde, took part in the workshop titled “Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Challenges in Implementing the SDGs”. Organised in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Accelerator Lab, the event brought together a diverse group of experts, researchers, and students to explore the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Professor Júlio Barros, a renowned specialist in Advanced Engineering Systems with a focus on AI-based industrial systems, led the workshop. Professor Barros’ expertise set the tone for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on how AI reshapes industries and addresses global challenges.

During the workshop, participants explored how AI revolutionises key sectors critical to sustainable development in smart agriculture, inclusive education and healthcare advancements.
While the workshop celebrated AI’s opportunities, it also sparked important conversations about the challenges and risks associated with its use. Key concerns included data manipulation, deepfakes and algorithmic bias. These discussions highlighted the importance of developing responsible AI frameworks prioritising ethical considerations and transparency.
The event concluded with a call to action for continued collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to harness the power of AI responsibly.
