RAIL Cabo Verde Strengthens Ties with RAIL KNUST During Productive Working Visit
Dr. Arlindo Veiga, the Cabo Verde Satellite Lab Lead for the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL), embarked on a working visit to RAIL at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) from 17th February to 8th March 2025. The visit reinforced academic and research collaboration between the two institutions while fostering knowledge exchange in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

During his stay, Dr. Veiga engaged in discussions with Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of RAIL KNUST, exploring avenues for joint research, student supervision, and capacity building in responsible AI development. He also toured the KNUST campus, gaining insights into the university’s cutting-edge research facilities.

Dr. Veiga participated in RAIL’s biweekly seminar, where he chaired the session on 4th March 2025, providing expert commentary on ongoing research projects. Additionally, he attended the RAIL Management Meeting in person for the first time, having previously joined virtually from Cabo Verde.
Dr. Veiga also held strategic meetings with RAIL’s theme leads, including a hands-on demonstration of AI and ML technologies in agriculture, coordinated by Dr. Eric Tutu Tchao, the AI in Agric Theme Lead. Discussions centred on collaborative research papers and joint supervision of postgraduate students paving the way for stronger academic ties between KNUST and Cabo Verde.

Beyond academia, Dr. Veiga immersed himself in Ghana’s rich culture, visiting the historic Manhyia Palace and other tourist sites in Kumasi, deepening his appreciation for Ghana’s heritage before departing on 8th March 2025.

Both institutions commit to sustained collaboration for impactful research and development. The Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) is a pioneering research hub at KNUST dedicated to advancing ethical and sustainable AI solutions for Africa and beyond. Through partnerships with institutions like Cabo Verde, it continues to drive innovation in AI for social good.
