AI4SD Project Donates Lego Kits to Robotics Club Schools

The Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development (AI4SD) Project, funded by the French Embassy in Ghana, distributed Lego robotics kits to fourteen (14) Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) Robotics Club schools at St. Hubert Seminary Senior High School on 19th June 2025. The donation aims to enhance hands-on learning in AI and robotics, empowering students with practical skills for the future.

The event was attended by key officials from the French Embassy in Ghana, including:

  • Julien Lecas, Head of Cooperation and Cultural Affairs
  • Diane Brami and Elisabeth Morzadec, Project Coordination Team
  • Ammishaddai Ofori, Project Manager for Communications
Rev. Fr. Henry Mensah gave the welcome address.

Rev. Fr. Henry Mensah, representing the Headmaster of St. Hubert Seminary SHS, expressed gratitude for the RAIL Robotics Club initiative, emphasising the need for practical, future-focused education. “The world is advancing rapidly, and education must go beyond theory. We are excited about these Lego kits and the opportunities they bring to our students,” he said.

Julien Lecas, Head of Cooperation and Cultural Affairs, French Embassy in Ghana.

Julien Lecas highlighted the transformative potential of AI and robotics in solving real-world challenges. “The challenge used to be access to computers, but today, AI and emerging technologies offer endless possibilities. With these kits, you have the tools to innovate and transform your communities. Use them wisely, stay disciplined, and keep learning,” he urged the students.

Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, AI4SD Project Lead

Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, AI4SD Project Lead, reminded beneficiaries of their responsibility to maximise the kits’ potential.
“As the saying goes, ‘Give a person a fish, and you feed them for a day; teach them to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime.’ These kits are tools for solving societal problems. Science must be practical and beneficial to society.”

Overview of participants at the event

He called for additional support from PTAs and stakeholders to sustain and expand the initiative.

Mr. Ishmael Ampong Ackah, RAIL Robotics Club Mentor, Uthmaniya SHS:

Mentors from the beneficiary schools shared how the RAIL Robotics Club has sparked innovation and student engagement:

  • Mr. Bismark Owusu (Afia Kobi Ampem SHS): “Students now have hands-on robotics experience, and their interest in STEM has grown significantly.”
  • Mr. Ishmael Ampong Ackah (Uthmaniya SHS): “Our club started with 23 students, 20 of whom were girls. More students are eager to join!”
  • Mr. Emmanuel Adjei (Ola SHS): “Thanks to RAIL’s support, our school won the Regional Energy Commission Challenge.”
St. Hubert’s innovative project showcased

The RAIL Robotics Club team from St. Hubert SHS showcased an AI-powered traffic barrier designed to reduce accidents by preventing vehicles from running red lights—a testament to the club’s real-world impact.
