RAIL STUDENT PROFILE: Julius Adinkrah

Julius Adinkrah is a PhD researcher at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a dedicated scholar at the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL). His work tackles one of Africa’s most pressing challenges: rural electrification. By leveraging deep learning and stochastic modelling, Julius is developing innovative frameworks to improve electricity demand forecasting in remote and underserved communities.

In rural areas, unreliable energy demand data often leads to inefficient grid planning, resulting in underpowered systems or wasteful overinvestment. Julius’s research bridges this gap by combining AI-driven forecasting with energy systems expertise, enabling more accurate, data-informed electrification strategies. His work can potentially transform energy policy and infrastructure planning across Africa, ensuring sustainable and equitable energy access for marginalised communities. Julius acknowledges the pivotal role RAIL has played in his academic journey. Beyond financial assistance, the lab has offered a supportive research environment where he can collaborate, receive mentorship, and explore innovative solutions to real-world problems. This support has been instrumental in advancing both his research and professional development.

RAIL also sponsored his participation in the Ghana Data Science Summit 2025 (IndabaX Ghana), where he earned 2nd place for his poster presentation, further validating the impact of his work.

Julius remains committed to using responsible AI to address high-impact societal challenges. His research can potentially shape future electrification strategies and energy policies across rural Africa, contributing to broader efforts toward equitable access to sustainable energy.. By aligning AI innovation with sustainable development, he aims to empower communities and drive progress toward UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).
