Training Session on Conducting Qualitative Interviews on Assistive Device Use and Uptake by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) – Scoping Study

As part of the preparatory activities for the Usage and Uptake of Assistive Devices by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) – Scoping Study,” a dedicated training session was held to build the capacity of interviewers. This session focused on empowering field researchers with the ethical, interpersonal, and technical skills needed to effectively and respectfully engage persons with disabilities during interviews and focus group discussions.

Mrs. Betty Agyei Kponyo, the lead on the study, officially welcomed the team and introduced Rev.Sister Frances Emily Owusu-Ansah as the lead facilitator and field support person. In her address, Madam Betty emphasised the importance of approaching study with empathy, integrity, and professionalism.

Rev. Sister Emily guided participants through practical and reflective sessions designed to help them interact meaningfully with persons with disabilities. Her facilitation emphasised the critical need to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all interviewees. The session explored core themes such as building rapport, preparing for interviews, listening deeply, probing with sensitivity, and handling sensitive topics.

The session also addressed how to lead inclusive focus group discussions with persons with disabilities. Sister Emily encouraged the use of inclusive facilitation strategies, including encouraging quiet participants, tactfully managing dominant voices, and using body language to support engagement.
