Prof. Jerry John Kponyo presents at Ghana’s Ministerial AI Bootcamp

The Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) joined Ghana’s 2-day AI Ministerial Bootcamp, reinforcing its commitment to shaping ethical and inclusive artificial intelligence policies in the country. The event, jointly organised by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Cabinet Secretariat, and UNDP Ghana, had top government officials, policymakers, and AI experts participate to chart a strategic path for AI adoption in governance.

Prof Jerry John Kponyo is the lead for the National AI Strategy review and adoption, and the bootcamp offered an opportunity to share with the Cabinet and AI Focal persons from the Ministries on progress made in drafting the strategy. It was also an occasion to engage meaningfully and receive feedback from key government sectors on the strategy.

As the Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of RAILProf. Kponyo was pivotal in guiding discussions on AI regulation, innovation, and capacity-building. His expertise was instrumental in framing Ghana’s approach to responsible AI deployment, with discussion centred on the Ghana National AI Strategy, made up of eight pillars:

  1. Expanding AI education and training
  2. Empowering the youth for AI jobs for the future
  3. Deepening digital infrastructure and inclusion
  4. Facilitating data access and governance
  5. Coordinating a robust AI ecosystem and community
  6. Accelerating AI adoption in key sectors.
  7. Investing in applied AI research
  8. Promote AI adoption in the public sector.

Prof. Kponyo emphasised that Ghana has the opportunity to lead Africa in responsible AI adoption with a focus on inclusivity, sustainability and innovation.

He called for collaboration between key stakeholders in making Ghana an AI hub by 2035.
