Tongmyong University Delegation Visits the Responsible AI Lab

The Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) welcomed a delegation from Tongmyong University, South Korea, as a step in building global collaborations. The International Programmes Office (IPO) facilitated the visit, which was centred on forging a collaborative partnership to develop innovative and ethical AI solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges.

Mr. Kang Kyung Su, Chairman of the Tongmyong Foundation, led the delegation with Prof. Eshetu Tefera Bekele from the Busan International College of Global Business and Mr. Dennis Kim, Marketing Manager at the Office of International Affairs.

Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director, RAIL, introduced the lab.

They were received by Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of RAIL, who shared the lab’s core vision: to serve as a multidisciplinary lab where artificial intelligence is developed as a powerful, responsible force for good, directly contributing to the advancement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He detailed RAIL’s strategic focus on applying AI to critical sectors such as Health, Agriculture, Energy, and Assistive Technologies.

Musa Ali Ibrahim presented his research work.

Following the introductory session, the delegation embarked on a comprehensive tour of the lab, where researchers presented a series of impactful, human-centric projects:

  • Amina Salifu presented her work on Accent Classification, developing AI systems that understand diverse speech patterns to foster truly inclusive and accessible technology.
  • Musah Ali Ibrahim demonstrated his research on AI for Rare Disease Diagnosis, which leverages machine learning to enable early detection of infant genetic conditions, paving the way for life-changing early interventions.
  • Ama Branoa Banful discussed her efforts in advancing code-switching in NLP, enhancing natural language processing to understand multilingual communication and seamlessly reflect authentic linguistic diversity.
  • Jullet Arthur and Prince Dawson Tetteh presented their collaborative project on AI-Powered Hearing Aids, which involves creating intelligent devices that filter background noise to enhance communication for the hearing impaired.
  • Dickson Marfo Fosu introduced his design for a novel AI Assistive Technology device aimed at empowering and increasing independence for the visually impaired.
Mr. Kang Kyung Su, Chairman of the Tongmyong Foundation, gave his feedback

In their feedback, the guests from Tongmyong University highlighted the practical applicability and commercial viability of RAIL’s research, expressing great enthusiasm for the strong potential for mutually beneficial collaboration.

RAIL looks forward with great anticipation to exploring these opportunities further, strengthening international ties in our shared pursuit of harnessing AI for profound social good.
