Are you a journalist or social media content creator passionate about science, technology, and innovation (STI)?
The British High Commission in Accra, in partnership with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and the Ministries of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST) and Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, invite applications from Ghanaian journalists and digital content creators to participate in the UK-Ghana Capacity Building for Media Excellence in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Reportage.
About the Project
This initiative aims to build the capacity of media professionals for excellence in STI reporting and digital storytelling, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to translate complex scientific and technological concepts into engaging, accurate, and accessible content for diverse audiences. The training will cover key areas such as climate, environment, frontier technologies, agriculture, health, and energy.
Why Participate?
- Residential Training: A 4-day intensive training camp for 25+ participants (journalists and content creators).
- Digital Skills Development: Learn social media analytics, short-form video production, visual storytelling, and platform-specific strategies for TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and X.
- Networking: Engage with leading researchers, policymakers, and innovators in Ghana and the UK.
Pitch for Funding: After the training, participants will have the opportunity to pitch for grants to amplify research stories through traditional media or digital platforms.
(Not mandatory, but applicants who have already identified researchers to collaborate with will have an advantage.)
Eligibility
- Ghana-based journalists from print, broadcast, or digital media.
OR
- Social media content creators with an active presence on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X (Twitter), or Facebook, producing content on STI themes.
AND
- Interest or experience in reporting or creating content on STI topics (climate, health, tech, agriculture, etc.).
- Ability to commit to the full duration of the residential training.
- Preference will be given to applicants who illustrate a clear vision for amplifying research stories and reaching wider audiences.
- Bonus: Applicants who have identified Ghanaian researchers whose work they wish to amplify.
We strongly encourage applications from women, individuals from underrepresented regions of Ghana, and marginalised groups.
Selection Criteria & Evaluation Process
Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Relevance to STI Themes (35%) – Demonstrated interest or experience in reporting or creating content on STI topics.
- Quality of Previous Work (30%) – Links to published articles or social media content.
- Potential for Impact (25%) – Clear explanation of how the training will enhance your work and reach wider audiences, as well as support the FCDO’s strategic goals of fostering innovation, strengthening UK-Ghana partnerships, and promoting evidence-based policymaking.
- Collaboration Readiness (5%) – Bonus points for applicants who have identified researchers or research topics to amplify.
- Diversity & Inclusion (5%) – Gender balance, regional representation, and inclusion of underrepresented voices.
How to Apply
Submit your Expression of Interest, including:
- Your name, media house or platform handle, and role (if applicable).
- A brief statement (max 300 words) on your interest in STI reporting or content creation, how this training will benefit your work, and how your participation can contribute to amplifying UK–Ghana STI collaborations and their impact
- In your statement, please explain how you plan to sustain the impact of this training beyond the program. For example, how will you continue reporting or creating STI content, collaborate with researchers, or leverage your platform to engage audiences after the training?
- Links to your published articles or social media content on STI (minimum 3; maximum 15, within 2025).
- Indicate if you have identified a researcher to collaborate with (optional but encouraged).
