We celebrate the journey of Dr Amina Salifu, PhD Graduate of KNUST Computer Engineering and the first female PhD scholar of the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL). She is a shining example of how impactful research can resonate worldwide.

Amina’s work, which bridges Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML), is breaking new ground. By developing deep learning models to detect native and non-native English speakers, with a special focus on Ghanaian English accents, she is paving the way for more inclusive, locally relevant speech recognition systems.
Her dedication and innovation have earned her prestigious recognition, including awards at the Deep Learning Indaba and the Ghana Data Science Summit, as well as the opportunity to present her work at the Women in Machine Learning Workshop in Canada.

As RAIL’s pioneering female PhD scholar, Amina now applies her expertise as a Data Scientist with the World Bank’s Digital and AI Innovation Team, further extending her impact on the international stage.

RAIL is proud to have supported Amina through funding, global networking, and expert mentorship, enabling her to transform research into real-world solutions.
